About

Through the Viewfinder

My name is Zdeněk Višňák and I come from the region of Kladské pomezí in the northeast of the Czech Republic – a landscape of sandstone rocks, quiet forests and railway lines disappearing into the horizon. Photography gradually became not just a hobby for me, but also a way of perceiving the world around me.

I photograph mostly while travelling and walking through ordinary places that often go unnoticed. I am interested in atmosphere, light, silence and the small details hidden inside everyday moments. Instead of chasing quantity, I prefer slower observation and photographs with a natural mood.

Project 35 mm

Most of my photographs are created within the personal Project 35 mm. I use a camera with a fixed focal length lens and photograph almost exclusively through the viewfinder. The natural perspective of 35 mm allows me to stay close to the scene and experience the environment more intuitively.

I prefer simplicity over excessive equipment. Wide focal lengths often exaggerate perspective, while long lenses compress it. The classic 35 mm and 50 mm focal lengths remain closest to natural human vision — in my case, I photograph with my eyes rather than with zoom.

Analog Soul in a Digital World

Photography gradually became more than just a hobby for me. Over the years I moved from simple automatic cameras to fully manual control with manual focusing and a more thoughtful approach to composition, light and atmosphere. I am a self-taught photographer who prefers simplicity, natural light and authentic moments over technical perfection.

I photograph mainly with fixed focal lengths and prefer composing through the viewfinder rather than a display. Most photographs are edited with subtle analog-inspired tones based on classic film aesthetics.

Although I work primarily with digital photography, I am strongly inspired by the visual character of traditional film. I experiment with monochrome as well as color rendering inspired by classic Kodak, Ilford and Fujifilm materials. Digital technology allows me to work more freely and efficiently, while still preserving a calm and timeless atmosphere close to analog photography.

My work is influenced by travel photography, quiet observation and everyday atmosphere. I do not focus on quantity or constant publishing. Some photographs remain unpublished for a long time before I decide they truly belong to the gallery.

Beyond Social Media

This website serves as my independent photographic space beyond the fast world of social media algorithms. I still share selected photographs on platforms such as 500px, Flickr and Instagram, but I prefer thoughtful presentation over constant online activity.

Photography for me is not a race for attention. It is a personal journey of observation, travelling and learning to see ordinary things differently.

My Website

My photographs are presented in four main galleries: Monochrome, Color Soft, Color Rich and Analog Rollfilm. Each collection has its own character. Monochrome is built around light and tone, Color Soft focuses on atmosphere and subtle colors, Color Rich is more expressive and image-driven, while Analog Rollfilm presents genuine analog photographs taken on medium-format film with a Flexaret camera. I select only photographs that I consider the strongest for the viewer, while all four collections are connected by my way of seeing and processing photography.

For those who want to look deeper, each gallery also includes a link to its archive. The complete archives contain additional photographs together with their metadata and descriptions. I continuously update them, replacing some photographs and removing others over time. The selection is therefore not fixed, but naturally evolves.

Alongside the galleries, the website also contains articles about photography, editing and other ideas connected with my photographic work.

“When everyone around me is taking pictures, I often keep walking and search for the real essence of the moment.”
